Visit England's survey showed that 63% of people are planning to book a holiday in the UK this year. Top of the wishlist are towns in countryside. Ludlow is a great choice for a break while socially distancing; plenty of space, away from the crowded honeypots and plenty to do while still socially distancing. Read our top 10 things to do in Ludlow article in our What's on section.
Friday, 5th June
The outdoor woodfired pizza oven has arrived! When we reopen we'll offer guests freshly baked pizza in our suntrap courtyard, with socially distanced table and chairs.
Monday, 1st June
We're waiting to hear when and how we'll be able to open again and offer you a much needed break after months of lockdown. In the meantime, we're getting ready. 4 of our en-suite rooms will now have a table and chairs for eating your breakfast in your own room and other meals too if you'd like to have food delivered from local restaurants. We're keeping an up to date list of who is delivering.
How does the foodiest town in England feed itself during lockdown?
Thankfully, pretty well. We have the advantage of already having local produce - delicious, and much of it within a few short miles available from independent shops on our high street. We also have great community. Day One, hundreds of volunteers signed up to make sure any of our vulnerable local people have someone to deliver food supplies as well as prescriptions, a friendly phone call etc.
We don't have Deliveroo in Ludlow but a few of the restaurants have delivery options when we need a break from cooking. We're keeping an updated list of restaurants/pubs and services that deliver.
Our favourite butchers, egg farmers and award winning deli have kept us well stocked. Even with flour! The Made in Ludlow shop in the marketplace opens every Thursday to sell produce from local farms and independent producers. They offer a great supply of fruit juices, baked goods, meats, gin, etc. Shaun of Ludlow Gin temporarily gave over production of gin to make sanitiser for the NHS. Thankfully, this didn't lead to a shortage of his lovely gin locally.
It's not the same obviously. We all miss our fantastic pubs and restaurants, Ludlow Brewery and the festivals that showcase our fab food to visitors. But Magnalonga is coming soon - a walking and food event on Sunday, August 8th will be perfect for socially distanced foodies. I knew that my rather extensive range of picnic baskets and items would come in good use and it really has. When we reopen, Hen & Chicken guests will be able to pre-order picnic hampers or sandwiches for walks etc.
And, I'm going to order an outdoor wood fired pizza oven ..................................................
Hope you're all keeping well and well fed.
